The Automotive, Identification and Standard Products business units are based in Hamburg – which is where NXP is headquartered in Germany – as are Research and Development and parts of Production. Our ‘wafer factory’ in the centre of the city manufactures more than 70 billion semiconductors a year, making it one of the world’s biggest plants of its kind. We employ around 1,700 people at our Hamburg site, and in 2011 we generated turnover of USD 4.2 billion. NXP’s products and technologies are highly innovative and are successful all over the world. In Hamburg we developed the electronic immobiliser, as well as the secure computer chips fitted in electronic identification documents, which are used in Germany and 81 other countries. The Near Field Communication Technology (NFC) developed by NXP (2002 together with Sony) will enable people to use their smartphones to perform secure, mobile, cashless payment transactions.
